The recent political protests in Romania have really got me thinking about the way that we elect leaders. In a matter of days a number of peaceful protests topple more and more politicians, beginning with the Prime Minister himself! Perhaps, it’s got me thinking, we should rethink the way that politicians are elected. We should make it more people-centred. How about a reality TV show?

It seems that Britain’s rich never really took heed of this warning. A recent study has found that less-academic wealthy children are 35% more likely to find success then their more-academic poorer peers (‘Glass Floor’ Study). It’s hardly surprising that people want to maintain their wealth – human greed is an inevitability of life – nor is it astonishing that people are zealously doing whatever is at their disposal to ensure the success of their offspring. These are justifiable motives, which anyone could be guilty of and one cannot condemn people for.

It’s a harsh – and arguably unfounded – realisation that I’ve been drawn towards recently, the death of originality and an alternative scene. The above piece of graffiti in La Gomera (a Spanish island off the coast of Morocco), in many ways encapsulates this fact. Graffiti by its very existence is the expression of self at the expense of the establishment and the government. And yet, here we have a ‘graffiti artist’ who is helping the corporations do their job. It might as well proclaim, ‘say yes to government surveillance’ or ‘let’s bail out the banks again!’

Are WordPress writers, YouTube musicians & Instagram photographers the new generation of starving artists or the pioneers of a new economic system? As some of you already know, I’m completing some research on the whether blogging devalues the written word[1]. However, I’ve come across an interesting article[2] that suggests that they might instead be the first ‘chosen few’ onto the proverbial Arc as it were, while capitalism is swept away in the flood leaving the earth cleansed.
